Morocco's 2002 coinage reform under Mohammed VI consolidated a fractional system that had become economically irrelevant — the 5 santimat piece represents purchasing power so eroded by that point that it functioned more as arithmetic than commerce. Bank Al-Maghrib retained the denomination largely for accounting continuity rather than practical necessity.
The aluminium bronze alloy adopted here replaced earlier compositions as part of a broader effort to reduce minting costs on low-value pieces, a move replicated across North African monetary systems during the same decade.
