Obverse description Interim emergency issue (Interims-Banknote) with the full text of the Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Bank's payment obligation in German, set within a simple rectangular border. The denomination '5' appears in numerals at left and right, with 'Fünf Rupien.' in large letterpress type at centre. The place and date of issue — Daressalam / Tabora, 15. August 1915 — are printed at lower left, with the branch attribution 'Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Bank, Zweigniederlassung Daressalam, In Vollmacht' at lower right, below which two manuscript facsimile signatures appear.

Reverse description Plain unadorned reverse with the serial number printed in large numerals at upper left and lower right. Two blocks of text appear in the centre: the first in German stating that the value of the note is deposited with the Imperial Government of German East Africa, the second repeating the same guarantee in Swahili. A counterfeit warning in German is printed below. Series letter 'C' appears at centre left and centre right. A small rectangular printer's stamp of the Deutsch-Ostafrikanische Zeitung, Dar es Salaam is present at the bottom centre.
