Struck as part of the global FAO coinage program, which the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coordinated across dozens of developing nations from the late 1960s onward to promote agricultural awareness through everyday currency. Indonesia's participation aligned with its transmigration and rice self-sufficiency drives under Suharto's New Order government, which by the early 1980s had succeeded in turning the country from the world's largest rice importer into a self-sufficient producer — a shift significant enough that the FAO itself formally recognized Indonesia for it in 1985.
