| Description de l’avers | Single-sided letterpress note with a plain cream ground enclosed within a rectangular ornamental border of frame lines. The heading 'DAERAH KARESIDENAN SURAKARTA' runs across the top, beneath which the legend 'Surat tanda penerimaan uang' appears above a handwritten serial number in red ink; the denomination 'LIMA RUPIAH' is set in large bold letterpress at centre, flanked to the left by a large red overprinted numeral '5'. The lower portion carries a bilingual redemption text specifying dates of 1 Mei 1950 and 1 Novb. 1949, with two signature blocks bearing manuscript signatures and their official titles arranged on either side of a small decorative vignette at the foot of the note. |

One of the more obscure regional military currencies issued during Indonesia's independence struggle, this note was produced by the military administration controlling the Surakarta Residency — the old Javanese heartland encompassing the royal cities of Solo and its surrounds. The Dutch military aggression of 1948–49 had disrupted central Republican finance, forcing regional commanders to issue their own emergency currency to keep local economies functioning behind the lines.
Printed locally under wartime conditions, production quality varies considerably across surviving examples. The series is genuinely rare; most notes were withdrawn and destroyed after the transfer of sovereignty in December 1949.
