Reverse description The reverse presents a detailed architectural rendering of the University of Mysore's Crawford Hall building occupying the upper and central field, depicted in a frontal elevation with its characteristic Indo-Saracenic façade, domed towers, and colonnaded wings. Superimposed in the lower foreground is a bust of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV, the founder of the university, shown in traditional royal regalia including an ornate turban, jewelled necklace, and ceremonial dress. The commemorative dates '1916' and '2016' flank the bust in the mid-field. The legend 'मैसूर विश्वविध्यालय शताब्दी समारोह' in Devanagari arcs along the upper border, while 'UNIVERSITY OF MYSORE CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS' in Latin script arcs along the lower border.

Additional information

The University of Mysore, founded in 1916, was the first university established in a princely state in India — created at the initiative of Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV rather than the British colonial administration. Its centenary in 2016 prompted this commemorative issue, one of dozens of themed 5-rupee pieces the Reserve Bank has struck over the past two decades as Indian commemorative coinage has expanded considerably in scope.
