Issued to mark the 60th anniversary of Indian independence, this coin belongs to a period when the Indian government was actively rationalizing its coinage — the older, heavier cupro-nickel rupee coins had been progressively replaced with stainless steel from the late 1980s onward, partly in response to the chronic problem of coins being melted for their metal value. The 2007 stainless steel series was itself a stabilization measure against that same threat.
