Struck to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, this issue was part of a coordinated global commemorative effort in which dozens of member states released their own UN50 coins in 1995. Sri Lanka's participation reflected the country's long-standing UN membership since 1955, though the island was by then deep into a civil war that had claimed tens of thousands of lives — an awkward backdrop for a coin celebrating international peace and cooperation.
