| Vorderseitenbeschreibung | Allegorical seated female figure with lions in an oval vignette at left, and a classical female bust in an oval vignette at right, both framed by ornate guilloche scrollwork with numeral 5 in each corner. The British Royal Coat of Arms appears centrally as an underprint alongside the serial number repeated twice. A bold red guilloche underprint bearing the word FIVE spans the central text area, which carries the promise-to-pay inscription dated 1st January 1881 at the Haldamulle branch, payable at the Bank in Colombo. Bilingual inscriptions in Sinhala and Tamil appear below the bank title, with the imprint BRADBURY WILKINSON & CO. ENGRAVERS &c LONDON at the foot. |

The Oriental Bank Corporation, chartered in Bombay in 1842 and headquartered in London, was one of the great colonial banking casualties of the nineteenth century. It collapsed in May 1884, just three years after this note was issued, when a combination of bad colonial loans and a sharp fall in silver prices triggered a suspension of payment. The liquidation wiped out shareholders and left creditors across Asia and Africa waiting years for partial settlement.
Haldamulle was a plantation district in Ceylon, and notes payable there were issued to service the island's tea and coffee estate economy. The 1879 coffee blight had already begun devastating Ceylon's crop by 1881, which put severe pressure on exactly the kind of rural branch banking this note represents.
