Issued to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Vivekananda, who was born Narendranath Datta in Calcutta on January 12, 1863. The coin was released as part of a broader commemorative program that year, though the circulating commemorative format meant examples entered general use rather than being reserved for sets. India's commemorative five-rupee pieces from this period were struck in substantial quantities and routinely spent, which makes uncirculated survivors more notable than their issue figures might suggest.
