| Obverse description | The Indian State Emblem — the Lion Capital of Ashoka — is depicted at center, showing three lions passant upon an abacus adorned with a Dharma Chakra (wheel) flanked by a bull and a horse in low relief. Immediately below the capital, the national motto in Devanagari script reads 'सत्यमेव जयते' (Truth Alone Triumphs). The denomination numeral '5' appears prominently in the lower field, with the word 'RUPEES' inscribed along the right peripheral legend in Latin script and 'रूपये' in Devanagari along the left. The country name 'भारत' in Devanagari and 'INDIA' in Latin script flank the emblem on the left and right respectively. |

Issued to mark the beatification — and anticipating the canonization — of Sister Alphonsa Muttathupadathu, who became the first Indian-born saint when Pope Benedict XVI canonized her in October 2008 in Rome. The commemorative was struck the following year, making it one of the rare instances of an Indian circulation-type commemorative honoring a Catholic figure in a predominantly Hindu nation.
