Pakistan's decimal coinage has seen numerous pattern trials that never reached circulation, and this aluminium 5 rupee piece from 2001 is one of them — struck for evaluation purposes and almost certainly rejected in favor of the cupro-nickel composition that remained in production. Aluminium trials at this weight suggest the State Bank was exploring cost-reduction options at a time when base metal prices were squeezing minting budgets across South Asian central banks.
