The plate letter system on this series — with L and R variants alongside unsigned-plate examples — reflects the Reserve Bank's practice of identifying the printing plate position used, a quality-control holdover that collectors track closely since certain letter-signature combinations proved far scarcer in circulation than others. Y.V. Reddy succeeded Bimal Jalan as RBI Governor in September 2003, making the signature transition mid-series a reliable dating tool even on notes that carry no printed year.
