Issued to commemorate the centenary of the Khadi and Village Industries movement, this coin marks the legacy of Gandhi's promotion of hand-spun cloth as an act of economic self-reliance during the independence struggle. The Khadi Gramodyog programme was institutionalised after independence through the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, established under a 1956 Act of Parliament. India's commemorative five-rupee series from this period frequently appeared in circulation rather than presentation sets, and KM#360.1a is distinguished from related varieties by its copper-nickel composition, as opposed to the stainless steel strikes produced concurrently under a separate reference.
