India's Income Tax Department traces its formal origin to 1860, when James Wilson — founder of The Economist and then Finance Member of the Governor-General's Council — introduced the first income tax act to help the Crown recover costs from the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. This coin marks the 150th anniversary of that legislation. Wilson himself died in Calcutta the following year, eight months into the job.
