Additional information

Lal Bahadur Shastri died in Tashkent on January 11, 1966 — the morning after signing a peace declaration with Pakistan's Ayub Khan — under circumstances that were never fully explained. No autopsy was conducted before his body was repatriated, and the official cause of cardiac arrest has been disputed by his family and various investigators ever since. He remains the only Indian Prime Minister to have died in office outside the country's borders.

The stainless steel variant was issued alongside a copper-nickel version for the centenary year, reflecting a broader mid-2000s shift in Indian commemorative coinage toward cheaper base-metal compositions for general circulation distribution.
