| Obverse description | The Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka, the national emblem of India, is depicted centrally in raised relief, showing three lions mounted on an abacus bearing the Dharma Chakra wheel flanked by animals. The motto 'सत्यमेव जयते' (Satyameva Jayate, meaning 'Truth Alone Triumphs') appears in Devanagari script immediately below the emblem. The legend 'भारत' in Devanagari arcs along the left periphery and 'INDIA' in Latin script arcs along the right periphery. The denomination '₹ 5', incorporating the Indian Rupee symbol, is prominently displayed in the lower field. |

Begum Akhtar, the ghazal and thumri vocalist whose recordings for All India Radio in the 1940s made her a household name across the subcontinent, died in 1974 mid-performance in Ahmedabad — she had insisted on completing the concert despite being seriously ill. The centenary coin was issued a year late by any strict reckoning, as she was born in October 1914.
