| Additional information |
Nepal's 1981 five-rupee issue falls within the long reign of King Birendra, who came to the throne in 1972 following the death of his father Mahendra. The coin was struck under the Nepal Rastra Bank, which had been established in 1956 to wrest monetary control away from the Rana oligarchy that had effectively privatized the country's financial system for over a century. Birendra himself would reign until 2001, when he was killed in the royal massacre carried out by Crown Prince Dipendra.
