The 3rd SAARC Summit was held in Kathmandu in November 1987, making Nepal the first host nation to strike a commemorative coin for the occasion. SAARC itself was barely two years old at the time — the charter had been signed in Dhaka only in December 1985 — and the Kathmandu summit was notable for producing the SAARC Regional Convention on Suppression of Terrorism, one of the organization's earliest binding agreements.
KM#1043 was struck in a relatively large copper planchet, unusual for Nepalese commemoratives of the period, which more commonly employed cupro-nickel.
