KM#56a is the nickel plated steel successor to the earlier cupro-nickel KM#56, introduced as rising base metal costs made the original composition economically unviable — a pattern that swept through central bank coin programs across the Indian Ocean region in the early 2010s. Mauritius had no domestic minting capacity; these were struck abroad under contract, most likely at the Royal Mint.
