Pakistan's 5-rupee note was phased out of paper production shortly after this series, with a coin substitution policy that had been repeatedly delayed since the 1990s finally taking effect. The denomination had become deeply uneconomical to print — replacement cycles were short, and the low face value meant the per-unit cost of production represented a significant percentage of the note's worth.
The PSPC facility in Karachi has handled domestic security printing since 1964, reducing Pakistan's earlier dependence on Thomas De La Rue in London. P#53 is among the last paper issues for this denomination before it was formally demonetized in favor of coinage.
