| Obverse description | A traditional Maldivian dhow under sail occupies the right side of the note, rendered in fine intaglio engraving against a guilloche underprint in pale blue and green. At left centre, a vignette of tropical foliage and palm fronds is set within an ornate scrollwork border that frames the entire face. The denomination numeral '5' appears at upper left and lower right, with bilingual date and authority inscriptions in Dhivehi script at centre. |

Thomas De La Rue had printed Maldivian currency continuously from the early independence period, and this 1990 issue continued that relationship. The Maldives Monetary Authority itself was only established in 1981, replacing the earlier Maldivian Monetary Authority, so by 1990 this was still a relatively young central bank consolidating its note-issuing framework.
The P#16 designation places it within a short series that was superseded fairly quickly as the MMA moved toward enhanced security designs through the mid-1990s, limiting the effective circulation window for this particular type.
