The Roue is a local complementary currency issued by the Association S.E.V.E. in the Pays d'Aix area of Provence, part of a broader wave of French monnaies locales that gained legal clarity under the 2014 Économie Sociale et Solidaire law. Member businesses agree to accept it at parity with the euro, and notes are purchased by participants using euros held in a backing reserve — a structure common to most French SEL and SOL networks.
Redemption back into euros typically incurs a small fee, deliberately designed to keep the currency circulating locally rather than being immediately converted.
