5 Roubles State Bank

This issue belongs to the final series of Soviet circulating coinage, struck as the USSR was dissolving around the mint. The State Bank (Gosbank) that authorized it would cease to exist by year's end, replaced during the post-coup reorganization of August 1991. Coins dated 1991 from this series were struck at both the Leningrad and Moscow mints, identifiable by the "Л" and "М" mint marks respectively — a distinction that matters more to type collectors than condition does, given how briefly these circulated before the ruble collapsed into irrelevance.
