The switch to nickel-plated steel for Russian five-rouble pieces came down to simple economics: rising nickel prices in the mid-2000s made the earlier cupronickel composition increasingly expensive to strike at face value. The magnetic steel core solved that problem but introduced a new one — accelerated rim wear and a tendency for the plating to lift in circulation, which is why problem-free examples from the later dates in this range are harder to find than mintage figures suggest.
