Part of the Bank of Russia's ongoing "Cities of Military Glory" and related commemorative programs, this piece marks Bucharest's liberation by Soviet forces in August 1944 during the Second World War's Eastern Front push through Romania. The Red Army entered the city on August 31st following Romania's abrupt switch of allegiance from the Axis on August 23rd — one of the more consequential political reversals of the final war years, opening a path through the Balkans that accelerated Soviet advances into Hungary and Yugoslavia.
