Part of the Bank of Russia's "Great Patriotic War" commemorative series issued for the 70th anniversary of the Soviet victory, this piece marks the Baltic Offensive of 1944–45, through which Soviet forces expelled German Army Group North from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The operation involved roughly 900,000 Soviet troops across multiple coordinated fronts and resulted in the isolation of the Courland Pocket — a trapped German force that held out until Germany's formal capitulation in May 1945.
The series was struck in nickel-plated steel rather than the bimetallic or silver formats used in earlier Russian commemoratives, a deliberate cost-reduction measure that allowed mass distribution through general circulation channels.
