The 1991 Gosbank series was printed in the final year of the Soviet state — this 5 Rouble note entered circulation just as the monetary system was beginning to buckle under shortages, wage arrears, and the inflationary pressure that would destroy the rouble's purchasing power within two years. Goznak's output that year was enormous across multiple denominations, a direct response to the cash deficit that had Soviet citizens queuing at banks simply to withdraw their own deposits.
At 12.175 million printed, this is among the more modestly struck values in the 1991 run. The series was superseded by Russian Federation issues after December 1991, though Gosbank notes remained legal tender in some successor states well into 1992.
