Ajman, the smallest of the Trucial States with a population of just a few thousand in 1970, funded its pre-federation government largely through the sale of commemorative issues like this one — coins struck for the international collector market rather than any domestic circulation. The Swiss firm Berne Mint produced many of these issues, and Ajman's output in this period was prolific to the point of embarrassing other Trucial rulers who felt the flood of collector coins was undermining the dignity of the upcoming UAE federation.

Schweitzer had died in 1965, five years before this issue. His appearance here alongside a micro-emirate he had no connection to is a straightforward artifact of the commemorative coin trade of the era.
