Qatar Central Bank's 1996 series replaced the Qatar Monetary Agency issues that had circulated since the early 1970s, reflecting the institutional shift when the QCB assumed full central banking functions in 1993. Thomas De La Rue printed the entire series under that new mandate. The 5 Riyal denomination in this run is among the lower-value notes, which typically see heavier circulation wear — surviving uncirculated examples are proportionally less common than the higher denominations from the same issue.
