| Beschrijving keerzijde | At centre, the royal emblem of Brunei — featuring a shield surmounted by a royal canopy and parasol, flanked by two crossed rifles and a ceremonial staff — is depicted in high relief within a recessed circular field. Below the emblem, the denomination $5 appears in the lower central field. The surrounding legend in Latin script reads KERAJAAN BRUNEI at the top and ULANGTAHUN KE 10 KEMERDEKAAN along the lower arc, with the date span 1984 · 1994 to the right, all separated by raised bullet points. A Jawi inscription in Arabic script curves within the inner circle beneath the emblem. |

Struck to mark the tenth anniversary of Brunei's independence from Britain, declared on 1 January 1984 after nearly a century as a protectorate. The sultanate had resisted full independence far longer than most of its neighbors — Hassanal Bolkiah's father, Omar Ali Saifuddien III, had declined independence offers in the 1960s partly to preserve British military protection during the Indonesian Konfrontasi period.
Brunei and Singapore maintain a Currency Interchangeability Agreement dating to 1967, meaning this coin was technically accepted at par in Singapore at the time of issue.
