This coin marks the final year of Malaysia's first commemorative ringgit series, issued to honor Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the country's inaugural Prime Minister and chief architect of Malayan independence from Britain in 1957. By 1971, Tunku had already resigned the premiership following the May 13, 1969 racial riots — a political rupture that reshaped the country's direction entirely. Striking a coin in his honor so shortly after that crisis was itself a pointed act of institutional rehabilitation.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong V refers to Abdul Halim of Kedah, who served his first term as King from 1970 to 1975.
