The "Prinsesedler" — princess notes — take their name from Princess Charlotte of Wales, whose portrait was considered for inclusion during the note's design phase, though the connection is more legend than confirmed history. What is documented is that these notes were prepared in 1814 under extraordinary circumstances: Norway was in the process of declaring independence from Denmark, and Norges Bank itself was not yet formally established when the first issues were authorized. The notes preceded the bank's official founding in 1816, making them a genuinely anomalous instrument — currency issued by an institution that did not yet legally exist.

Grosch, better known as an architect, was one of the few trained designers available in Christiania at the time.
