Additional information

These years bracket one of the most turbulent stretches in modern Iranian history. The 1953 CIA- and MI6-backed coup — Operation AJAX — toppled Prime Minister Mosaddegh and reinstated Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's full authority after a period of near-exile. Coins of this type struck in 1952 and early 1953 circulated under a government actively nationalizing the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company; those dated after the coup circulated under an entirely different political order, though the dies changed nothing to reflect it.
