Obverse description The obverse field bears a bold Arabic inscription arranged in three lines reading 'السلطان عبد العزيز خان' (Sultan Abdulaziz Khan), the name and title of the Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz. The lettering is rendered in a clear, deeply struck calligraphic style characteristic of mid-19th century Tunisian gold coinage. The coin is bordered by a fine beaded inner circle encompassing the entire inscription. No pictorial device is present, in keeping with Islamic numismatic tradition.
