| 背面描述 | At center, an armillary sphere depicted in detail with crossed bands and parallel circles representing the celestial globe, a device emblematic of Portuguese maritime heritage and long associated with the House of Aviz. A small decorative ornament appears below the sphere. The circular legend CIRCUMIT·ORBEM PECUNIA·TOTUM encircles the design, proclaiming that money circulates around the entire world. The overall composition is characteristic of Luso-Brazilian coinage of the late 18th century. |

Portugal's copper coinage of this period was chronically problematic. Maria I inherited a monetary system strained by the costs of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake reconstruction, and small-denomination copper issues were repeatedly adjusted in weight and design to combat widespread counterfeiting and hoarding. The Large Type 5 Réis exists in two distinct crown varieties — low and high — reflecting mid-series die modifications made at the Lisbon Mint, catalogued separately by Bentes as 308 and 309.
The high crown variety is the scarcer of the two and commands meaningful premiums in finer grades.
