Pedro III was Maria I's uncle before he was her husband — a dynastic convenience arranged decades earlier and formalized upon their joint accession in 1777. He held the title of king consort without any executive authority, with Maria exercising sole governance. He died in 1786, which is why the coinage bearing both names ceased the following year and was replaced by issues under Maria's name alone.
