The Azorean coinage of Maria I emerged from a practical problem: the islands' geographic isolation meant that metropolitan Portuguese copper rarely arrived in sufficient quantity, leaving local commerce chronically short of small change. A dedicated colonial issue was authorized to fill the gap. These pieces circulated hard on the islands and survivors in any decent state of preservation are genuinely scarce — not rare by catalog designation, but rare in practice.
