| Obverse description | Central to the obverse is a large Roman numeral V denoting the face value, surmounted by a Portuguese royal crown rendered in relief. The date appears below the numeral in the lower field. Two small quatrefoil ornaments flank the denomination in the field. The entire central device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, beyond which a circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, reading JOSEPHUS.I.D.G.P.ET.BRASIL.REX, identifying King José I of Portugal and Brazil by the Grace of God. |
