Additional information

João V died in 1750, making this one of the final copper issues of his 43-year reign — the longest of any Portuguese monarch. His reign saw the establishment of the Mafra convent-palace and a period of extraordinary wealth from Brazilian gold, though that same wealth created chronic neglect of the copper coinage, which was considered beneath the dignity of a court flush with minted gold. Small-denomination pieces from these late years were struck in limited quantities and circulated hard among the urban poor of Lisbon.
