Obverse description Royal crowned arms of Portugal at center, featuring the quartered shield with castles and bezants, surmounted by a royal crown. The legend IOANNES is partially visible to the right of the shield, with DEI GRATIA fragmentarily legible along the upper periphery. The shield is rendered in the baroque style typical of the Joannine period, with fine detail in the armorial bearings. The overall design fills the field with the crowned coat of arms as the dominant motif.
