| 正面描述 | Central field features the crowned Portuguese royal arms, displaying the five escutcheons and seven castles of the Portuguese shield, flanked by ornate foliate scrollwork and floral sprigs. The royal crown surmounts the shield at the top. The encircling legend reads CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL, running from lower left to lower right along the periphery. The coin's border is defined by a fine milled edge. |

Portugal's Azorean coinage in the early twentieth century occupied an awkward administrative position — the islands were constitutionally integrated into Portugal proper, yet continued issuing distinct regional bronze well into Carlos I's reign. This 1901 piece is the sole date for the type under Carlos I, minted in Lisbon for circulation across the archipelago at a time when the monarchy was already under serious political strain; Carlos would be assassinated in Lisbon in 1908.
