Wehrmacht Behelfszahlungsmittel — auxiliary payment certificates — were issued exclusively for use by German military personnel within occupied territories and field postings, deliberately kept out of the civilian monetary system to limit currency disruption in occupied economies. The 5 Reichspfennig denomination is the smallest in the 1942 Wehrmacht series, and its practical utility was marginal at best; small transactions in field canteens and military cooperatives rarely demanded fractional pfennig change.
Rosenberg 502 is among the more frequently surviving pieces of the series, likely because so little actual exchange value attached to it that soldiers simply kept them rather than spent them.
