A beaded inner border surrounds the design, and the circular legend ·EINIGKEIT·UND·RECHT·UND·FREIHEIT· — the first line of the German national anthem — runs along the upper periphery. |

This copper pattern was struck in 1932 as part of the Weimar Republic's final attempts to evaluate alternative coinage compositions during a period of severe fiscal contraction. The government was actively exploring cheaper metal options as silver supplies and minting budgets came under pressure from the Depression. Patterns in copper at this weight and diameter were never approved for circulation — the Republic itself collapsed before any such retooling could be implemented.
