Reichskreditkassen notes were purpose-built occupation currency, issued by a Nazi financial administration body established in 1939 specifically to extract value from conquered territories without formally committing Reichsbank resources. The 1944 date on this series is somewhat misleading — production and distribution were already underway in the early 1940s across occupied Western Europe, the Balkans, and the Eastern Front, with notes recycled across multiple theaters as the front lines shifted.
By 1944, German forces issuing these in the field were operating in retreat. Considerable quantities were captured, abandoned, or destroyed rather than redeemed, which complicates any honest assessment of surviving population.
