Venezuela's 1858 coinage was struck under extraordinary political pressure — the Federal War, one of the deadliest conflicts in Latin American history, broke out the following year and effectively dismantled the young republic's monetary infrastructure for nearly a decade. The 5 Reales denomination itself was already an anachronism at issue, a holdover from the colonial real system that Venezuela would formally abandon as the country staggered toward decimal coinage.
Surviving examples in any grade above Fine are genuinely scarce; wartime hoarding and metal recycling saw to that.
