Brazil's Olympic commemorative program for Rio 2016 was among the most ambitious ever undertaken by a host nation — over 30 silver issues, each pairing a sport with a Brazilian cultural landmark. This coin links athletics with the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói, Oscar Niemeyer's 1996 flying-saucer structure perched on a clifftop across Guanabara Bay from Rio. Niemeyer completed the design at age 88.
Casa da Moeda struck the series beginning in 2014 under an IOC licensing arrangement that required dual-theme pairings across all issues.
