Additional information

Part of Brazil's ongoing commemorative city series, this issue honors Olinda, the colonial town in Pernambuco whose historic center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Olinda's founding predates Salvador and Rio de Janeiro — the Portuguese established it in 1535, making it among the earliest European settlements in South America. The town was seized and partially burned by the Dutch West India Company in 1630, and again sacked during their withdrawal in 1654, leaving a layered architectural record that the coin series was designed to document.
