In the central field, a large three-masted sailing vessel is shown in three-quarter view, its rigging and furled sails rendered in fine relief against the mirror-polished field. To the left, a colonial church or civic building with a prominent bell tower is depicted, evoking the architecture of early nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro. The circumferential legend '200 ANOS DA CHEGADA DA FAMÍLIA REAL AO BRASIL' arcs around the upper portion of the coin, while the date range '1808-2008' appears in the lower exergual area, flanked by small ornamental devices.
