Obverse description Central oval cartouche enclosing the Basel crosier (Bischofsstab), the heraldic symbol of the canton, rendered in fine relief. The cartouche is flanked by two symmetrical olive or laurel branches extending from the base, forming a wreath-like frame. The legend CANTON BASEL arcs across the upper field, divided on either side of the central device, with a small floral ornament separating the two words at the top. The denomination 5·RAP· appears in the lower field beneath the wreath. The entire design is enclosed within a finely toothed border.
