Basel's cantonal coinage authority had only a narrow window to strike issues under its own name — the Federal Coinage Act of 1850 swept away cantonal monetary autonomy entirely, standardizing the Swiss system under federal control. This 1826 piece predates that transition by a quarter century, produced when Basel still maintained its own mint and set its own billon standards.
